The Skirian donkey

'Trohadia' sandals,
The Skyrian donkey is a actually a small-sized brand of horses. It might look like a poni to you but it's not! It's of the most rare species of horses around the world. It's a protected species as there are only 260 horses all around Greece and the majority of the in the island of Skyros.
Wander around the island you may have the opportunity to bump into some of them.
The famous Skyrian sandals or 'trohadia' as the locals call them date back in ancient Greece. The word comes from the verb 'run' and it was actually used by shepherds who used to run around and collect the scattered herd in the ancient times.Today there's only one shop in the island, the one of Mr Manolis who painstakingly makes them for locals and tourists. Worth a visit!
