Travelling alone....
Here I want to state the positive points and then fight back you possible negative ones.
Travelling alone is a unique way to get to know yourself better, first of all and then...the rest of the world! It grants you a unique way of exploring your inner self before you start exploring the globe! Trust me on my saying, it starts with a cautious, hesitant step and evolves into a powerful and endless urge to keep on travelling...
If you haven't reached the point of this complete state of climax of joy of travelling alone, you might of course trouble yourself with questions.
So you might wonder about:
1.Safety
Well, there's a lot to say here but let me stick to some simple rules.
Always arrive to a new destination during daytime.....much easier to orient yourself and much safer considering you carry stuff with you and it might involve walking to a hostel.
Avoid getting drunk unless you are among people you have met along the way and you trust enough to make sure they won't leave you lying on a pavement.
Always let a member of a family know where you are or post sth on Facebook or Blog.
I have to say what worst things happen when you least expect them so when you travel alone, you tend to be cautious and wary of everything....that increases the possibilities of travelling safely while on the other hand decreases the possibilities of something bad happening to you. Always careful with your belongings even in the safest places, even when you are not alone. I've heard stories of people being robbed of bags, cameras or other belongings while they were surrounded by friends and much less cases of people being robbed while travelling alone.
2.Loneliness
Well,I have to say this is a choice, not a result of travelling alone.Trust me on that!
Aways think positively....Think of how your sociable skills will develop and how you may change as a person if you make a choice to travel alone once in your lifetime. Think of how much stronger and much more confident you may be. Think about all these new friends you are bound to make along the way and think about all these new experiences you will live! Fear keeps us stuck, makes us weaker and leaves us no traces of hope. Overcome your fears.....step to the unknown!
''A boat is safe in the harbour, but that's not what boats are for!''
Willian G.T. Shedd, American theologian.
3.Plan my trip
Where do I start?Chaos!
Some people are more into planning, some others not! Regardless of that, it's a trip,a destination you want to go to and therefore...a place you want to learn about. Right?
Start your planning by fixing the dates and take pen and paper to make a rough plan of what you want to visit and see. Internet is an amazing source of information though some times too much of what you want and can get easily overwhelmed.
One good advice is to find people who have already travelled there or people who have planned to go and ask for information.
My Website ''The Globetrotting Project'' is somewhat a guide to destinations around the world. Gives guidance, advice and help to those who wish to travel to the places I have been to or even the places that I haven't but once asked, I am willing to do the research for you. As a travel counselor, I guide and help either through my experience or meticulous Internet search or even after being in contact with my friends or other travellers around the globe. So this is what you need to start with, once you decide on your destination!
And please remember these words.......
''Σα βγεις στον πηγαιμό για την Ιθάκη, να εύχεσαι νάναι μακρύς ο δρόμος, γεμάτος περιπέτειες, γεμάτος γνώσεις.'' Καφάβης
''When you set sail to Ithaca, wish for the road to be long, full of adventures and full of knowledge.'' Kavafis, one of the most important Greek poets of modern poetry.
Well.....What's your Ithaca?
